Jamal Lowe scored his first goal for Wigan Athletic as the hosts ended Nottingham Forest’s 10-game unbeaten run in the Championship.
The summer signing from Portsmouth exchanged passes with Gavin Massey before scoring the only goal of the game from close range 10 minutes before the break.
Nottingham Forest had been unbeaten since their loss at home to West Bromwich Albion in their opening game of the season, winning six of their next 10.
Victory at the DW Stadium by a three-goal margin on Sunday would have moved the East Midlands club to the summit of the Championship.
The three points are big for the Latics as they had started the day just two points above the relegation zone.
Paul Cook’s side have now won their last three games at the DW and kept a clean sheet in their last four on home soil.
They didn’t have it all their own way though. In fact, the visitors will wonder how they didn’t get on the scoresheet in the second half as they created a number of chances. Both Rafa Mir and Lewis Grabban missed gilt-edged opportunities to earn their side at least a point.
With today’s game being moved to Sunday for television coverage, both sides will have a short turnaround. Nottingham Forest are back in action on Wednesday night when they host Hull City, whilst Wigan have to go to Derby County the same night.
