Match report: Salford 2-0 Stevenage

Salford City won their first match as a Football League club with a comfortable 2-0 win over Stevenage at Moor Lane on Saturday lunchtime.

Mani Dieseruvwe scored a goal in each half, becoming the Ammies’ first-ever Football League goalscorer.

In what had been an even opening half hour, the visitors had a goal disallowed before Graham Alexander’s side struck the crossbar.

Salford went ahead on 29 minutes when Dieseruvwe poked home a low cross from close range.

Last season’s National League play-off winners controlled the second half as Stevenage never looked like getting back into the game after they fell two behind within three minutes of the start of the second half.

Chris Neal’s goal was rarely threatened, particularly in the second half as the hosts looked comfortable in possession.

Mani Dieseruvwe missed two good opportunities to complete his hat-trick but the striker will be delighted with both his individual performance and the result.

The Greater Manchester club travel to Crawley Town next Saturday, whilst Dino Maamria’s side are at home to Exeter City. Stevenage could be in for a long season with 11 new signings this summer, four of which were signed over the past three days.
