Tranmere Rovers made it back-to-back promotions and a place in next season’s EFL League One thanks to a 119th minute winner in the League Two playoff final against Newport County at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.
There wasn’t a lot between the two sides in 90 minutes with very few clear-cut chances created all game. However, the Exiles hurt their chances of promotion when they were reduced to 10 men in the 89th minute when defender Mark O’Brien received a second yellow card.
Striker Connor Jennings took advantage of this one minute before we were headed for a penalty shootout when the Tranmere midfielder headed home Jake Caprice’s cross.
Newport hadn’t won a playoff game to reach the final as they drew both of their semi-final legs against Mansfield Town before beating the East Midlands club in a penalty shootout.
Tranmere’s victory was their second playoff final win in successive years after beating Boreham Wood with 10 men only 12 months ago.
Manager Micky Mellon will now have the pleasure of guiding his side out to League One football, beginning in August.
