Match Report: Birmingham 1-1 West Brom

Winless Birmingham City were held to a draw in the West Midlands derby against West Bromwich Albion on Friday night.

Jota put the hosts ahead from close range midway through the first half but failed to double the Blues’ lead from the penalty spot a minute later as his effort was saved by Sam Johnstone. Kyle Bartley conceded the spot kick for a handball inside the penalty area.

West Brom were inspired by the penalty save and got their equaliser through Matt Phillips five minutes before half-time.

Che Adams was denied a winner for Birmingham by a fine save from Johnstone in the second half, whilst Dwight Gayle hit the bar for the visitors.

Birmingham remain winless after seven games this season, drawing five and are one point above the relegation zone before the rest of the weekend’s action. They have scored just five goals.

Rivals West Brom have moved up to fifth. The Baggies host Bristol City on Tuesday night before Birmingham go to Sheffield Wednesday 24 hours later.
