Marcelo Bielsa started life in England by guiding Leeds United to an impressive 3-1 win over Stoke City to start their Championship campaign.
Mateusz Klich gave the hosts the lead on 15 minutes one-on-one against Jack Butland following Samuel Saiz’s defence-splitting pass. Klich was making his first start for Leeds since last September.
Pablo Hernandez doubled the Yorkshire side’s lead in first-half stoppage time when his 18-yard effort squirmed under the England goalkeeper.
Stoke City were second best all day but halved the deficit early in the second half when Benik Afobe converted a penalty after Barry Douglas brought down Tom Ince inside the area.
It was Douglas’ corner five minutes later that Liam Cooper headed home to restore Leeds’ two-goal advantage.
Bielsa wasn’t the only manager taking charge of a team for the first time today – Gary Rowett jumped ship from Derby County over the summer before spending a lot of money at the Bet365 Stadium. It may only be game one but Rowett’s side looked like they were still on their holiday break.
