Aston Villa have completed the signing of goalkeeper Andre Moreira from Atletico Madrid on a season-long loan, the club have announced.
The 22-year-old is the West Midlands club’s first signing of the summer.
Moreira has been with Atleti since 2014 but is still yet to make his La Liga debut in the Spanish capital. The former Portuguese under-21 has had loan spells in his home country with Moreirense, Uniao da Madeira, Belenenses and SC Braga.
The Villans were widely-expected to sign a new goalkeeper this summer after Sam Johnstone was their number one last season, on loan from Manchester United. Johnstone has since joined rivals West Bromwich Albion in a permanent deal.
Aston Villa had had financial problems earlier in the summer but have now secured investment from billionaire businessmen Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris and can be expected to bring in a few new faces before the end of the summer transfer window.
Steve Bruce’s side reached the Championship playoff final last season, losing to Fulham. They are among the bookmakers’ favourites to return to the Premier League this season.
